PRODUCTION DIARY 006

So I got the program today and it was a surprisingly long install. About 16 GB of content, most of which I installed to an external USB 2.0 drive for space reasons. I haven't had a chance to even look at LiveType or Soundtrack Pro yet, but Final Cut, in the short time I have been playing with it, seems like the dream I have been searching for. It is easy, as I already something up and running with little effort. It is fast, meaning I was worried about the time involved rendering filters and motion on clips. It is powerful, such that many things normally done in a full fledged compositor, even layer composite modes, can be done here.

I was able to import an entire folder where I had my clips into a bin inside the program. It imports everything as "selected", which is cool because once I grabbed one clip to put on the timeline, the entire sequence was there, in order and ready for cutting and trimming. That's fast! I was able to easily zoom and pan the oversized clips I had rendered for that purpose, and since every clip was a Quicktime file with embedded alpha, I tested throwing in a background on another layer, and saw the effect I expected. This all amounts to one thing, speed!

I know I have only begun to scratch the surface of what is possible here. Imagine a pipeline so streamlined that can finally attain my dreams of doing series work. Everything is reusable. Motions, filters, settings can all easily be copied from one clip to another or to all. These are the types of things which make this advantageous over doing the same work in a compositor where its one clip at a time. There is so much repetition in what I do, this is liberating! I have a lot more to explore. We'll see how it goes in the coming days.

FCP does sound interesting, I used it about 5 years ago, but from your description, it seems that much has been improved since then, especially in the work flow area. Will this latest version of Final Cut carry a lot of the compositing workload for you?

Hey TW are you still working at UFO. One thing I noticed, last year I started drafting for AVinc. That when I go home I don’t have the energy to work on anything I want to work on. But I can sure waste time playing WoW or even just web searching. How do you make time? I have had times where I put my foot down and said today ill do something productive. I turn on the pc go sit for sec while it boots then I wake up 5 hours later, yeah some how I just feel asleep and I don’t even know when. Frustrating. Another thing that has me really bothers me is LW3d lack of CA tools I cant believe how bad they and the lack of good 3rd party add-ons, imp starting wish I never stopped using max. Well I might jump to xsi ill see how things go this summer. But GL your project is sweet.

re:'' since every clip was a Quicktime file with embedded alpha''

what/how do you make a quicktime with embedded alpha from say lightwave or vue?

Cali: I am not currently working at UFO, but I know exactly what you mean. This is even worse if there is a similarity between actions performed at your job and the actions needed on your own project. For example, if the same software is used.

I found the best way to make time is to make time for WoW. Rest and recreation are essential to success and the best thing to do is create a schedule and put the game time in it. Work on the project one or two nights per week and on weekends during the day, for example.

steve: Choose the "animation" codec with millions of colors+ and I believe you will get an alpha from any program that provides one.

iftz:I think this latest version of Final Cut will carry all the compositing workload for me. I'm not doing face replacements, wire removals, ROTO or other big movie compositing work after all. For putting my anime together, it does more than I will need.
