NEWS

In interesting news for the day, I got a call from TOKYOPOP and was informed that they were holding actual copies of World of Hartz fresh off the press. I need to contact my editor to get a few for myself. It will apparently street May 11th, retailing for $9.99 and will be available wherever manga is sold. It sounds like they are very happy.
Also in Chaos news, I just received an email from TechTV in Japan, asking for the script to my first short Understanding Chaos. Apparently they are translating it and preparing to subtitle it for broadcast on the Japanese version of the popular technology station. More on that as it develops.

FINALE!
The gig is done! The project has wrapped. Man it was fun. Hopefully a time will soon come when I can post a pic or two. I learned a lot, especially in regards to Combustion 3. While I will continue to use my favorite Mirage, my pipeline and workflow has been permanently affected. I will never work the same again. My hard drives will be totally reorganized very soon.
I am back home again tomorrow. I will get back into the swing of my own projects, namely the children's video. I want to get it done because it looks like more gigs are coming very soon!

Late

It's late. It's a Sunday night. I am not at home. I am on a gig! Well, it's actually a very fun gig and a high paying gig so I am by no means complaining. So what is the new thing this time around? Combustion 3!
Yes, on this gig I have been learning Combustion, a compositing package of some notoriety in the high end VFX world. Often times I find myself wishing I had Mirage, but make no mistake about how powerful Combustion is. It is an amazing tool, and I probably don't even know the half of it!
This gig ends in the next couple of days and I will take my Combustion knowledge and of course apply it to my Mirage workflow. There is nothing I have done, even on such a large project, that could not be done in Mirage. It's just a matter of Pipeline. Combustion works with Discreet's FLAME system and is very well integrated into the workflow here. Mirage will do the same on my projects, but that doesn't mean I haven't learned many new ways to really start pushing Mirage, and thus my work to maximum limits based on what I have learned on a major project.

There is a Final Fantasy orchestral concert at the Walt Disney concert hall on May 10th, but it is already sold out! When I first heard of this I really wanted to go. I have the 2002 concert CD from Tokyo Dome and it is amazing. Uematsu-San's music is unmatched in both the video game and film world, in my view.
I am currently working on a major freelance gig. Perhaps the biggest I have done in a long time. After this I return to work on my children's video and other projects. Regular posting will again resume too. Be sure I am not sitting here doing nothing! More as things develop...

I KNEW IT WOULD HAPPEN!!
NAB is going on right now in Las Vegas! I probably wrote somewhere earlier that since the release of JVC's HD10U, the low cost 720P camera they came out with last year, that Sony and Panasonic would eventually have to show off their competing products. I also figured NAB would be the place to do it. Well according to this article on the apple page:
Together, Panasonic and Apple are bringing HD over FireWire capabilities to desktop and mobile editing with Panasonic's new AJ-HD1200A, the first HD production VTR to offer a FireWire interface, and Apple's newly-announced Final Cut Pro HD professional video editing software, enabling mass adoption of HD resolution images on the desktop, and even on PowerBooks.
What's interesting is that the article goes on to mention:
"With high definition now available on the desktop with Power Mac G5 and the AJ-HD1200A, the investment necessary for HD editing is dramatically reduced," said Stuart English, vice president of Marketing, Panasonic Broadcast. "For example, the hardware and software needed to equip a full function HD editing suite with over 100 hours of 24fps HD on-line storage is less than $50,000."
Now that may sound like a lot, but keep in mind, the indie creator doesn't need 100 hours of ON-LINE to do a feature. That's talking about broadcast. It would be much much cheaper for us to get up and running. I think it is getting closer and closer to time to start really looking at that G5 system!

Well, that wasn't so bad. The site is fixed and functional again. Issues will pop up in the future as I, under my current user, am not the owner of the site, but at least I can keep updating normally again. Unfortunately a bit of space is being wasted in that I am moving things around rather than actually deleting or changing them. Unless I can recreate the old user, delete the entire site, and then re-upload it under the new user. hmmm....

If you are wondering why there hasn't been an update on my site in a while, there are some problems. The sum of the matter is this:
Due to the proliferation of SPAM I decided to eliminate the email address I had been using for the last few years. That address and the user associated with it, happened to be the owner and administrator of this site. Unbeknownst to me, that user, having uploaded this entire site, is the only one with the permission to change it. My new user, though an administrator as well, does not have the right to alter those files created by the original. I cannot delete them. Or can I?
It seems I was able to delete the main blog page. That is what allows me to type this even now. Still, I am not the owner of the rest of this site. I must either find a way to delete it, or rename the links, which really are few, and make new folders to hold the same files. That sounds like the route I will take until I can be made able to delete the old pages for myself.
Anyway, if it works, I will be fully back up to speed on this site, and being SPAM free, I will once again enjoy coming to my computer daily to get some real work done!

A note to those who may not be aware, my normal email address has been killed due to excess SPAM. It got to the point where sorting through it to find the emails meant for me was taking far more time than I had. Any email sent to that address will, of course, bounce. I will not be giving out my new address for any reason. Those who wish to contact me can do so through this web page using the contact form.
I apologize for any inconvenience, but SPAM will do that. Also know that because of a recent gig, which while time consuming is extremely cool, it may be a bit longer than usual for me to get back to you. I am on-site a lot and do not receive my mail here. More on that as it develops.

New things pop up on occasion and sometimes things change considerably. I have been doing a wide variety of side gigs for some time. I did J4A, which turned out to be a fiasco where it may never find its way to air. I did an anime style pilot, for which I was paid, but have yet to hear from those for whom I did it. I have done some sound FX editing work and a few other things.
With my plans for much larger scale publishing on future projects, comes the need for much larger scale gigs. Those gigs are becoming increasingly easy to find, probably because of the DVD released through TOKYOPOP. More people are calling, not that I'm complaining. The time is here to build up the means and methods to do the future release right!

More Kill Bill Anime?

According to Animation Magazine:
In a recent interview with Empire magazine, auteur filmmaker Quentin Tarantino revealed plans for an animated prequel to his two-part revenge saga Kill Bill.
If it gets made, it will reportedly focus on Bill and his assassin training at the hands of Estebian Vihaio, Hattori Hanzo and Pai Mei. The film would be drawn in the anime style like the animated sequence produced by Production I.G. in Kill Bill Vol. 1.
What's interesting is that the article goes on to mention:
Warner Bros. set a new trend with the direct-to-video animated Matrix sequel/prequel The Animatrix. The success of that release has led Universal to greenlight toon prequels to its upcoming effects flicks Van Helsing and The Chronicles of Riddick.

SCI FI Goes Witch Hunting!

According to Animation Magazine, there will actually be a live action, that's right live action adaptation of Witch Hunter Robin coming to the cabler in 2005-2006.
The gritty urban tale of action and horror centers on a small, specialized team of cops who set out to capture rogue witches who are abusing their powers. Robin, the newest member of the team, happens to be a witch herself–a trait that makes her a great cop and a danger to everyone around her. Joe Menosky, who spearheaded SCI FI’s upcoming Anonymous Rex, is on board as writer and exec producer. Roy Lee (The Ring) and Doug Davison will also executive produce.

ENOUGH FOOLISHNESS!

Alright, enough of the April foolishness. It's time to get down to business. I am once again working on my children's video which will be headed for the nearly empty faith based home video market and some questions have arisen.
When I begin to do something in 3D, I have to really ask myself, "Why am I doing this in 3D?" Failing to ask this question has slowed me down in the past. I believe it kept me from moving forward on this project even for a while. The thought of having to sit down and start modeling elements etc. So I started looking at different "screens" found in other anime or sci-fi shows.
After looking at different screens in Lain, Dronez, GITS, and a couple of other shows, what I immediately noticed is that there was nothing that required the use of 3D animation to do them. Suddenly, the idea of being able to do screens quickly in Mirage flashed in my mind. The screen got done, and all the reusable elements are now available to do many more screens for this show.
Sometimes, it really becomes necessary to put some thought into the methods by which certain scenes will be done. The first idea to come to mind is not always the quickest or the best. Why reinvent the wheel? Studying what has gone before can often show faster easier ways of realizing a scene or even an entire project.

Getting the musical numbers down properly for this new Chaos film is the most difficult part of the production. As it is that I did all the voices in the original short Understanding Chaos, in the same fashion I will do them all in this new project. This also means that I must sing all the parts.
I have a somewhat musical background, having been in band through most of my schooling, but that involved playing instruments. I don't have similar experience in vocal work, and certainly not in the opera style. To that end, I have been training diligently with local opera singer Boviani Burgovski to bring my vocal abilities up to speed. He had this to say:
Well, if nothing else, I can say that Terrence is determined. I haven't seen this kind of motivation throughout my career.
He went on to offer up very inspiring comments which lead me to further believe that I have chosen the right path for my first feature film endeavor. He continued:
Terrence seems to believe he can do it, and that's what counts in the end, right?
The countless hours of practice with the aged professional have not been to no avail. While far from ready to record, the results of all my effort is clear:
Needless to say, I still have a ways to go...
